This past weekend, Joe and I visited Massanutten for a family get together and Joe's birthday. We had a great time! After getting home, I got cracking on my first cake for Wilton's Course 3 class. After a month long [forced] break from Wilton classes, I was ready to learn about rolled fondant and tiered cakes. This week I created a 'Fondant Package Cake'. I would consider my first experience with fondant a complete success!
Yesterday [December 17] was my birthday! This year I got to celebrate it for a whole weekend, starting Friday [December 14]. We [Joe and I] got tickets to one of Richmond Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker at the Landmark Theater. I lived across the street [diagonal] from the Landmark Theater for the [one] semester I spent attending VCU, however, Friday was the first time I set foot into the Theater. The ballet was extraordinarily entertaining and I hope to make it a regular holiday season tradition. After leaving the theater, Joe and I headed a few blocks over to an amazing [Mediterranean-Moroccan style] restaurant, Cous Cous. The food was great amazing and the atmosphere was elegant yet comfortable.
All in all, this birth
Last night, I completed Lesson 4 and the grand finale cake of Wilton's Course 2. To make this floral treat, I used the basketweave technique, rope border, and various royal icing flowers. The results were quite lovely.
Then, this afternoon, I had the pleasure of receiving a beautiful vase of flowers sent from Joe's mom [future mother-in-law Sarah].
This week, I completed the fourth and final lesson in Wilton's Course 1 of cake decorating. I learned to decorate with flowers by completing the last step in creating "The Wilton Rose". I worked on floral accents, leaves and vines and ended the class by constructing the rose spray and decorating my last cake of the course.
The final cake design displayed in the book looked, for lack of a better word, girlie. Since I just couldn't seem to grasp the 'identity' of the cake while creating it, I managed to make it look ridiculous proportionately. I put into the cake what I was required. No more, no less. That being said, I believe I did a decent job on the roses themselves.
Last night, I completed Lesson 3 of the Wilton Cake Decorating class. This week, I learned about flowers and figures. I worked on Part 2 of "The Wilton Rose" and used a star tip for figure piping and making the shell. I also learned the fun and easy drop flowers. Lesson 3 resulted in a clown cake I mistakenly waited to photograph after a long car ride home. Unfortunately, part of the shell boarder perished while shifting around inside the cake courier.
Going out to his car yesterday morning, Joe was shocked to find the passenger window
was completely busted in. Someone broke the window and damaged the frame of the door to get to Joe's iPod. We stopped a passing cop to get a report. He was quite offended that we called our car insurance company before dialing 911 for a non-emergency. The cop had just
completed a report for the same crime one street over and wasn't happy about filing another report. The middle compartment and glove box contents were scattered
in front of our apartment building. It's slightly embarrassing how
many fast food napkins we've saved up.
